Honouring First Nations: Norma’s mentor over many years was a Tsimshian Elder who helped transform her life on many levels. This relationship took her on a spiritual journey that resulted in the opportunity to meet several elders and leaders. This Exhibition is her tribute to the important contribution these people have made to their Peoples and culture. Earth, Air, Fire, and Water: “Reflections of the natural world around us – how we experience nature becomes expressed like a mirror through our thoughts and emotions. Not only our planet but the entire universe is formed from material particles we call elements. In ancient times, nature was divided into four elemental categories, Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. These basic elements included the scientific elemental table as well as our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual selves. Nothing was viewed as separate. How we interact with nature determines the outcome of our lives. Nature in its purest form deeply heals and uplifts us from the trials of today’s living but it can also destroy us when we do not recognize that we are not separate. Nature can appear as chaotic and orderly individually or together. I represented these aspects of nature by visually using vibrancy of colour, abstract techniques as chaos, realism as order, and a combination of both the express them as we personally experience them. My hope is that it will remind us that nature is life itself reflected in each one of us.”
